The Congreve Lab joined others from the Rowland Institute to take part in scientific outreach at the Museum of Science. This entailed presenting scientific demos introducing concepts about nanotechnology and the nanoscale to museum visitors. It was a great time for all involved! Kids already have such a passion for science - we're excited to see them in the lab soon!
![]() The Congreve Lab continues to grow! Sam Sanders from Columbia University has joined our group to work on upconversion materials and applications. Sam graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013 with a BS in polymer chemistry, and received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Columbia University in 2018 where he worked for professor Luis Campos and Dr. Matt Sfeir from Brookhaven National Lab. His research focuses on the control and application of excitons. Welcome Sam! Kealan Fallon, a postdoctoral research associate from the University of Cambridge has received a Lloyd’s of London Fulbright Award to enable him to research at Columbia University and in the Congreve Lab at the Rowland Institute at Harvard University on one of the most well-regarded and impactful scholarship programs in the world.
As a participant, Kealan has been selected to undertake pioneering interdisciplinary research on improving the efficiency of solar energy technologies. High energy light that is typically wasted in traditional solar cells can be split in half by some materials, creating two excitations of useable energy from a single photon. Only a handful of materials are known to be able to do this, and Kealan’s research will investigate the complex mechanisms of the process with the aim to construct design rules to direct the creation of next-generation solar devices. Kealan grew up in London where he studied his undergraduate masters degree at University College London (2013). He stayed at UCL for his doctoral studies where he researched novel conjugated organic materials for applications in plastic electronics under Dr Hugo Bronstein. After receiving his PhD in 2017, Kealan moved to the University of Cambridge with the Bronstein group for a postdoc before being awarded a Lloyd’s of London – Fulbright Scholar Award by the UK-US Fulbright Commission and Lloyd’s Tercentenary Research Foundation. His interdisciplinary fellowship will focus on multi-excitonic processes in solar devices and will be split between materials synthesis at Columbia University and device fabrication at the Rowland Institute. Kealan will start in July 2018. Congratulations and welcome, Kealan!
Jaleel Ismail is joining the Congreve Lab as an undergraduate researcher. He is a freshman at Harvard University studying Biomedical Engineering and English. He is from Marietta, Ohio, where he was the Editor in Chief of the Original Paper and Team Captain of the Varsity Crew team. His current interests include writing and poetry, film, and working at the Harvard Crimson.
Jaleel will be studying perovskite crystal formation and kinetics.
